Ken Hamlin and Marcus Trufant have already been given the franchise tag. Shucks. The Dolphins desperately need help in the secondary, especially at the safety position. With Yeremiah Bell deciding to hit the free agency market rather than just resign with the Dolphins (despite Miami’s intentions to resign him), the Dolphins may be looking at a bleak situation at the safety position. Against most expectations the Giants did not tag Gibril Wilson. Jacksonville is rumored to desire his services. I really don’t see that happening, though I was wrong about my Hamlin prediction. Just resign Y-Bell. The Kentucky steelworker story is way too good to let go.
There may be some opportunities to draft a safety in the late second to fourth round. The only way I see the Phins grabbing one earlier is if they make a trade with the Cowboys for their two first rounders. Then they could grab Kenny Phillips or DaJuan Morgan. There has been some interesting thoughts surrounding Arkansas State’s Tyrell Johnson and he’d be available later on. There’s a link to an article on Johnson at the bottom. It’s kind of interesting.
The combine had some stellar performances. Vernon Gholston and Jake Long both put up 225 for 37 reps. The bench session is one of the most controversial events at the combine from an injury standpoint. Nonetheless it is my favorite. I lift weights fairly faithfully, and have a halfway decent bench but watching those guys separates the men from the boys. Impressive though the brutes were, none were more impressive than Arkansas running back Darren Mcfadden. I really enjoyed watching Mcfadden play in college. The guy’s got power and moves, and he’s clearly got speed. Mcfadden ran a 4.27 forty. At 6’2” and 210lbs he’s a freakish talent. He’s already voiced willingness to be utilized as a wide receiver and even went on to say he could play defense if need be. Hell, he’s even thrown the ball well when he’s needed to. Converted to wide receiver he’d be a more dangerous version of T.O. Convert him to safety and he’d be more dangerous than Brian Dawkins. OK, just a homerfan’s idle dreaming. Got to lay off the sauce while I’m writing this stuff.
I will be doing a Miami Dolphins mock draft over the next few days and will post it on Friday. I promise less homerfan dreaming and more bonehead suspicion. It’s the least I can do.
Somewhat useful link, as mentioned above in the sort-of useless blog entry.
